Szilárd Borbély writes the very mundane reality of a small village in the Hungarian Great Plain through the story of a struggling family, while at the same time this world encompasses a complex, multi-layered world: the mysterious rivers that flow beneath the village and, perhaps, the forgotten, destitute poor struggling throughout Eastern Europe. Naturalism intertwines with poetry as easily as the myths hidden in the stillness of the low plains intermingle with the wild swearing of tavern-keepers.
