The False Maid or the Cunning Punished (La Fausse Suivante ou le Fourbe puni) was written by Marivaux in 1724 and is of a burning reality. Love is only a pretext in Marivaux's play, and the whole action revolves around revenge. That of a woman who wants to teach a lesson to the one who deceives her, but also to all the women who allow themselves to be deceived, in a murky game of dissimulation of the social condition, of the confrontation of ideas and conceits. Money, power and the war of the sexes are subjects of disturbing modernity and psychological actuality, and the characters of the 18th century become our contemporaries.
