Written in Moscow in 2002, the play OXIGEN was staged by the Teatr.doc Documentary Theatre Centre in 2003, becoming a manifesto-performance, sought after by spectators in the Russian capital, invited to numerous international festivals and multi-awarded. After Oxygen was translated into English and after a performance-reading in 2004 at the Royal Court Theatre in London, this play by Ivan Viripaev began to conquer theatrical territories, from the most diverse cultural spaces.

If we were to identify a theatrical version of Quentin Tarantino, then we must follow in the footsteps of the plays of Ivan Viripaev, this rebel from Russia, who is related to the legendary American director by opening a space of play between tenderness and cruelty – a space mined and ready to explode at any time, a space where parody, farce, tragedy and poetry intersect and shock the viewer. But the two artists are related above all by continuously pushing the limits. For the American artist, it is a clash with the limits of film, for Viripaev, it is a continuous confrontation with the limits of theater. And Oxygen is an emblematic text of this confrontation, a text with a completely atypical dramatic structure, as a result of which we are not called to a play, but rather to a play-concert. A concert with 10 songs from a new album about the active principle of life – oxygen!

OXIGEN is an explosive dialogue between an EA and an EL, a dialogue that starts from the story of a crazy love, that love so strong that it drives a person crazy and can lead to murder. A crazy love that, along with the thirst for air, are the causes of all the events in the world. The dialogue is difficult to handle, without inhibitions and full of contradictions, just as complicated and contradictory this earthly life is. A life that should respect the Ten Biblical Commandments, which EL and EL take to heart: the Ten Commandments become 10 compositions, with stanzas and choruses that outline stunning, upsetting and exciting wonders, questions, themes for reflection about the evil that grinds the lives of people in Russia and the whole world, a world shaken by endless forms of violence and human degradation. The concert begins with Piece No. 1. – Dance. The dance of the lungs, a dance that identifies with life and the right to live on this earth. A dance that announces a show in which everything is different, because it is about the story of some wanderers who come out in front of the audience in search of an additional dose of oxygen, that breath of oxygen that we need when we are overwhelmed by too many emotions, in the confrontation with this complicated, exasperating, contradictory and illusory world.
