The musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" by John Cameron Mitchell, music and lyrics by Stephen Trask has had a tremendous impact on audiences since its first off-Broadway production in 1998. Winner of the prestigious Tony Award, Obie Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, the show has been acclaimed in hundreds of productions on stages all over the world. The play was screened in 2001, the film receiving the award for best director at the Sundance Film Festival and a Golden Globe nomination.
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" tells the story of an existence twisted between seeking success on stage and finding fulfillment in a rowdy, maverick existence. The incredible trials that Hedwig goes through, but especially the commitment and sensitivity with which she reveals them to the audience on rock chords, made the piece weave a cult aura for lovers of the musical genre. Hedwig is not a manifesto for a certain type of sexuality, but a theatrical experience with a deeply human message that urges openness and empathy towards the suffering that, in fact, every human being feels.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch: show-concert, desperate cry for love of the human being. It illuminates the shadows, gives outcasts a chance at dignity, and, subverting convention, challenges us to look in the mirror: Hedwig is us. Upon first reading, the text unexpectedly reminded me of the hopeful ending written by Nina Berberova in her novel, "The Companion": "And even if I am told that a poor fly has no right to aspire to greatness universal, I still won't stop waiting and telling myself: you can't die, you can't rest, there is still a being that walks the earth. There is still something that is owed to you and that you will get back one day... if God exists.» (Răzvan Mazilu)
