The play takes place in the summer of 1942, in the town of Mátraszentanna. The Tót family, an ordinary family, has a son on the Russian front. For his sake, to ensure the protection of his direct superior, his mother, father and sister have been hosting the Major for two weeks. He arrives at them, in a precarious mental state, with jittery nerves. The Tót family's approach is an essential one, because the fate of their son depends on it. The major, suspicious and indignant at the slightest sign of fatigue, finds the meaning and beauty of life in making boxes. His visit, however, shatters the order and tranquility of the family and takes on deep meanings.
