American Buffalo was written in 1976, being the piece that consecrated Mamet. The play presents the story of Don, the owner of a second-hand store who plans, together with his friends Bobby and Teach, to rob a customer, a coin collector, who had just bought an old coin with a bison head (American buffalo) from the store. Don thinks that the $90 he got is too little, so he wants to recoup his loss and sends Bob, the "good guy" to steal the coin. He returns with a bison head coin, but not the right one…
